For those of you who missed the recent tour of Tom Ze with Tortoise in May, or want to relive the great experience if you were there, you can go to the site of the LA radio station KCRW, where Tom and Tortoise's in studio appearance was broadcast two weeks ago and is NOW AVAILABLE IN REAL AUDIO!!!! Check it out. If "Brazil is the country of the future" then the soundtrack must sound like this... There's also some brief interviews with Tom and the band. This is the site. http://www.kcrw.org/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?tmplt_type=Home_new

I just checked out Tom Ze in the NYC. It was definitely one of the fattest shows I had witnessed in awhile. I was lucky enough to pick up a promo copy of the remixes on vinyl for 99 cents a couple of months ago (someone must have fell asleep while stickering the albums). Anyway, for a few weeks that record was permanently lodged on my turntable; the only time I took it off was to play it on my radio show at school. I want to thank Mr. Ze for his incredibly unique brand of music, I have yet to purchase the Defect cd but I own the other two Luakabop releases, and also say that the show I attended was inspiring. One more thing, the boys from Tortoise,or "Tor-twas" as Tom would say,did an excellent job backing the Brazilian genius; they aided in conveying the quirkiness and humor of Tom's recorded music into a live setting. Peace...

Are there any plans to release a doc-ment of this tour? I noticed a video camera in the balcony at Irving plaza. A concert video would be pretty wonderful. I've been thinking about that show quite a bit. I dragged a bunch of my friends up from Philly and, though they'd never even heard of him before, the too have become drooling Ze obsessives. Many thanks to all who made this possible. It was perfect. Nick

Drop what you're doing. Find out where TOm Ze is playing. Go there. His concert on Friday night in Chicago was great. Thanks Luakabop for putting this together. He's touring with Tortoise (who are from Chicago so a lot of ther=ir fans were at the show)They did a really great job on the arrangements. The xylophone or vibraphone was a nice touch. John McIntire andthe percussionists did a great job with the Brazilian percussion, and Tom actually brought one of his band members from Brazil (Jarbas Mariz?) to play, though he's not listed on the bill. He played that Martian mandolin that everyone who is a Tom ze fan will recognize. Also helped out on vocals, percussion and guitar. Tom Ze was doing lots of crazy antics and theatrics onstage. He was acting out the songs and getting crazy. He has all of this pent up energy, like a little kid on recess. Fans will be very happy: Tom does a little bit of everything--songs from the latest release (about 5 I counted), from Hips of Tradition (2 or 3) and from the first compilation (quite a few). He had the mostly non-Brazilian audience singing along during the choruses, and was actually quite funny with some of his interludes between songs. The audience loved him. Tom Ze is a genius, no doubt about it. I don't want to give away the "finale" but you must stick around for it, as somebody else already posted. Let me just say that it is worth sticking around for coz it'll blown you away. His music is out of this world. Like the offspring between Sun Ra and the Girl from Ipanema. Tell your friends in San Fran and LA not to miss this one. You can also pick up the Luakabop remix cd at the show in the lobby...it grooves. Best of luck to Tom Ze and Tortoise. We talked to Jairo (Jarbas?) after the show and he said that Tortoise may be coming with them to Brazil.

Tom's earlier albums...yeah, big problem. Obviously we want them out, but Warners, our distrubutor and financial daddy, does not see them as big sellers, so we will eventually make a deal with someone else to pick these discs up. It may take some time, but I believe we can get them out again. I sure am glad everyone's enjoying Tom's live show, he's really something special. D

Tom ZÈ's Boston show was enough to make half of the audience hop a bus for New York for the next show. I've been a ZÈ fan for a while and it was so amazing to see the man in person. Imagine your loopy, carefree but misunderstood grandpa and cross him with a teenage punk rocker, and you've got Tom ZÈ live. Tortoise did a fantastic job of keeping up w/ZÈ's mad genius. A piece of advice: stick around for the end of the show. It you burn out early you'll miss Tom's most visually stunning instrumentation. Those in front, beware the microphone, he has a tendency to get a little violent with it. If you have the means, I highly recommend you see Mr. ZEE (as he claims americans pronounce his name)... --janet.

Hello all Tom ZÈ fans! This is the first time I visit Luaka Bop's web site and got really surprised by all this buzz around Mr.Z. I'm a 27 year-old Brazilian who always enjoyed foreign underground music better than the local artists, but Tom's music really blows me away!! Back in 1993 I had a project of running an independent rag (which focused mostly on the hardcore-punk scene)and that's when I met Tom ZÈ. I liked LB compilation so much that I decided to interview the man and, boy did I have a good time! I almost cried when ZÈ started telling me his sad and magic stories... No kid, he's not only the best Brazilian composer ever - but one of the most gifted and creative guys alive! By the way, a friend's band just released an independent CD which contains a superb Tom Ze's cover (those who are interested, please drop me a line). Eduardo

I'm excited about TOm Ze's first U.S. tour this Spring. My only hope is that Tortoise can keep up with Tom's very Brazilian arrangements. For example, Tom uses a lot of Brazilian mandolins (listen to Nave Maria from his first Luaka or Mente na Gene, Track 1 from the new Album, as well as traditional percussion (tho in an untraditional way) I'm talkin agogo, bumba, surdo and pandeiro. On his new album, he has got somebody playing the rabeca (emere--defect #4). It's called a rebec in English, and it's a primitive medieval fiddle that came to Brazil via Portugal via France via the The crusades (?). Anyway Tom's music has guts as well as a heart and a brain. And these instruments are the guts of the music. I know Tortoise has a percussionist and stuff, but I hope that they can keep some of the genius/integrity of the music. I remember I heard those Mandolins on his first Luaka album on Nave Maria...blew me right away. I'm sure other fans feel the same way. Maybe Ricky Skaggs is available. On the other hand I totally relate to TOm's TROPICALISM approach to mixing and throwing in diverse musical elements that you get from working with an avant-garde post-rock Chicago band. Hopefully there will be a "happy medium" between the Brazilianess and the weirdness/experimental side that is so Tom Ze. I wish Tom and Tortoise and Luaka the best of luck with the tour.

Hello, I am urgently looking for the vinyl record of Tom ZÈ, Brazillian classics 4. I am mailing you from a publishing house, Imschoot, publishers and we are currently working on a book with Arno Hintjes, the Belgian rock star. For this book, he listed 17 records which have influenced him during his life and this record of Tom ZÈ is one of them. We only need the record to scan the sticker which is glued in the middle of the vinyl record. If this record is no longer for sale, than I would like to ask you if it would be possible to send us a copy, we scan the sticker and we send it back to you, by express-mail. I hope you will be able to help me with this request, as it is almost impossible to find the record in second hand shops in Belgium. We would also like to offer you a copy of the book of Arno, as soon as is ready. The book we are making consist of 17 vinyl records, cut out to a rectangular format of 148 x 210 mm. On each records, we reproduce the stickers of the original records selected by Arno, together with a small remark of Arno on the record and 40 photo's of Arno's rock life. You can contact me by e-mail on kurt@griffo.be or by fax on 32 9 222 55 07. I am looking forward for an answer from you, sincerely, Kurt Vanbelleghem Editor

OK, here's some thoughts on "Fabrication Defect": I am not certain whether Tom is saying the concept of 'arrast“o'(wild unfettered stealing from others) is new when he announces the era of the composer is over, and we live in the era of the plagiarist. The Beatles "White album" is entirely arrast“o. DB exhibits an amazing talent of arrast“o. Beck is the undisputed king of blatant arrast“o. The Grateful Dead were a 30 year exercise in arrast“o. In spite (or maybe because) of this, all of these musicians are seen as trendsetters and emulated. Seems DB wrote that Tom uses a chainsaw on this CD. I do hear an electric saw.....sounds like the kind used at a slaughterhouse.... Also, the liner notes say DB added 'some effects' in the studio. Do we hear some very subtle yet inimitable guitars toward the beginning of the CD?

So I wrote a "piece" (of what should be a large 'net-pie) for inclusion in the music site "Perfect Sound Forever" which tends to specialize in under-appreciated musicians and composers. That was a few months ago. I a--ume they still have the article in their archives, if not, one of you can write another one. Maybe they'll get the idea. Oh, by the way, thank you, Luaka Bop propagandist, for publishing the lyrics of the upcoming Tom Ze album. These lyrics seem to match his 70's peak. I'm glad. Once again, the name of that site is "PERFECT SOUND FOREVER." I'm too lazy to give the HTML, but if you type the search you'll find it.

I thank you and would like to know more about Miron Bia*oszewski, if you could me let me know a probable publishing house of his in English. By the way, my English is not any good, but I don't apologize, I'm Brazilian and speak only Portuguese. I really liked your e.mail. Thanks, abraços, Tom Zé. My e.mail is tomze@sti.com.br

Well Warners cut out Tom's CD's even though we tried to tell them what he means and even though we will have a new one from him by the end of the summer. I'm as sorry as you are.

Ever since I first heard Tom Ze at a friend's flat in N.Y. city, some seven-eight months ago, I have been unable to overcome the addiction spiritual streching-contraction-expantion brings along (actually I am not even trying to forget Tom Ze's music.) It was an outrageous utter deep connection. His music, so visceral, so true, so potent, yet so rational, so sweet, was forever imprinted within me. I even almost took my friend's CD with me... But I was naive enough to believe I would get my own copy in a most virtuous way. So off I went, even when warned of the "hard to find" status of the CDs. My search began back home (central east MI) among the many record stores we have. After a few tries, I decided to ask my mother down in Venezuela to go get the CD for me. Needless to say, she had no luck regardless of the close ties between Brazil and Venezuela. Next stop: Miami; no luck whatsoever. Then, off I went to Canada (Otawa & Montreal,) but nothing new really happened there. Back in Michigan, I decided to check the LUAKA BOP web sight and even try to order the CDs via on-line trhough Warner Bros.; they NEVER answered my e-mails. So, tired of so many record stores, music illiterates, and the same story time after time I decided to write you. Can you let me know where can I go? Whom can I buy these CDs from? any ideas? Please, do not tell me to ask my friend for a copy, for I have tried that before and it hasn't worked so far (and tapes are not the same.) And please, do not tell me to keep blindly wandering about until I finally stumble onto them in some "used CDs" record store, for I think I have lost my faith in this particular tactic (lack of taste seems not to be in order when it comes down to CD dumping.) Do you think there is a way for me to enventually (rather soon) enjoy the bliss of owning and hearing a Tom Ze CD again? I know the CDs are not longer been produced by you, but I guess there should be a way around it, right? Iknow you guys (and many other people) understand my urging. Please let me know, THANKS Zofia

Hey, any idea where I can get either of the 2 Ze CDs? I'd really like to give them to a friend of mine, but haven't been able to locate them, new or used. And a few NYC shows would be a total bonus.... —ken

Catch a bus and make it stop at Av. Paulista, 149. The show is free, on Isntituto Cultural Itaú -- a place devoted to cultural events located in a big fancy building and sponsored by a bank, so they can't charge us *laughs* See you there in the Blue Room =)

Just a comment... Why aren't the big brazilian newspapers talking about it? Gee, all I see is someone by the name of David Byrne *huh?!* and Rolling Stones...?! Too bad *lol*

More info on Toms show in Sao Paolo. The t-tle of the show was... www.viagem@carro-deboi (ponto com) @ futuro correndo tanto pegou no rabo do passado (Yes, all that was the t-tle) Which means, roughly, www. travel or voyage at tail of the ox dot com...the future is running (advancing) so fast that it's catching the tail of the past. A beautiful idea, no? Abrazos DB in SP

Alright, everybody =) David, I'm (N O T) pleased to inform you that I am going to miss your show here -- working!!! *grrrr* I just saw you and Tom Zé in this hillarious interview on tv (Jô Soares). And felt like yelling my bellybutton OUT cos I always end up losing my favorite singers/bands concerts here due to full time work :/ So I wrote a little coment about that interview in my hp (http://members.theglobe.com/thesweetgirl/newsbreak.html) and thought I'd let everybody who didn't watch it get a glimpse of it here =) Now the scretching Tom is really out of this tropical jungle world, ain't he? *lol* All his talking in between songs is some of the things about Tom I really enjoy. I'm a big fan of the man who speaks funny Portuguese and wacky English (and I guess I was about 15 or something when I first saw another man singing and dancing like a techno-mambo-jambo on a funny large white-creamy suit) =) I live a block from Palace. Yeah tell me I'm lucky. Everybody who likes Tom feel free to scratch me late at night when I'm working! AND WE ARE LOOKING TO HEAR ABOUT TOM'S NEW MERCHANDISE! Tchau!!! =)

I just saw Tom's show here in Sao Paolo and it was fantastic! Truly strange and wonderful and completely inspirational. For example, he came out alone...although the band's gear was on the stage....and began mumbling into the mike, scratching himself, turning, going off mike, arranging himself, beginning tetatively to sing, then disolving into a mumble...scratchingh some more...etc etc...like he was completly alone and unaware of the audience...it was hilarious and beautiful. OK, then he brought outh the band and they would do some songs...and he talked a lot between songs (I could understand quite a bit, as Spanish is close is some words and structure to Portuguese). He held the audience completely...as no one, not even his band, knew what he was going to do next...and the stories were wonderful...crazy, inventive, obcene, and surreal. Tom also is amazing limber (for his age) and his weird and wonderful "choreography" was, well, stranger than my own...needless to say, I loved it. And the band was good too. He's working on a new CD...tentatively t-tled "Defective Merchandise", in English anyway...which is a loose translation of his Portuguese t-tle, which is also tied to a whole musical and sociological theory...more on that later. We're gonna mix the CD in NY later this summer, so should be out soon...well, soonish. Best from brasil...my own show is tomorrow here... David B

I'm not so sure that this is the right forum to be saying this on, but I'm thinking of writing a term paper on Tropicalismo as a form of musical resistance (I know what you're thinking: "Academia kills art." hush!) As you can probably tell, I'm having a hard time finding proper "authorative" and "academic" texts on the subject. Can anyone help me out here?

Hola Senior Ze' (That's about the extent of my foriegn language!) I'm a teacher at a secondary school located in Michigan. One of the electives which I teach is a class on World Music. As a fan of yours (and most Luaka Bop artists) I spent a class period exposing the students to your first two cd's released on Luaka Bop. The response was fantastic! I had really envisioned using your music to explore the wide range of musical styles found in Brazil and hadn't expected the interest of the students to be so high. The class was very responsive to the twenty tracks which I played for them. The purpose of the class is to expose the students to varous types of global music. I select music based on how different it is from what the student is likely to hear on the radio. The class (and myself) were wondering how many (quanity) of each the the cd's released by Luaka Bop were pressed and sold? Some memebers of the class were greatly disappointed to see that two of the Luaka Bop cd's are now sold out. Thank-you for your time, Kyle J. Piotrowski kjpiotro@tardis.svsu.edu

I really admire what you're doing. A huge fan of Tom Ze, his single on a compilation of yours struck me and has left me grounded ever since. If you have the time, please advise on how I can hear more of Tom (having bought your two releases already) Let me know if you're hiring. Oh, and say hi to Dave for me.
