Iconoclast Paulo Bragança takes the long-buried roots of Fado, Portugal’s national song form, and, with contemporary sensibility, brings them to the fore. Rhythmically invoking Brazilian styles, flamenco, ambient and hip-hop, Amai was a huge hit in his home country. “Their feelings aren’t young, their ideas aren’t young,” Bragança says of today’s Fadistas. “The original Fadistas were far more punk.”
