kassin + 2 nouvelle

November, 2006

Man! We were so busy last month that we didn't have time to send you all an update. We are now pleased to introduce the full range of hard AND soft-shelled delectables that we've been busy coaxing to the surface. These include: Brazil Classics 7: What's Happening in Pernambuco: New Sounds from the Brazilian Northeast, Kassin + 2 Futurismo, World Psychedelic Classics 4: Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia, and new music from Jim White.

Regarding the new Kassin +2, main-man Kassin says, "The title "Futurismo" is actually the opposite of what this album is about. If you see the cover, you'll notice that it's nothing near futuristic! The cover has mold on it! I wanted to surprise those who predicted that I'd do something really modern (laughs)."

On this new release, the band meets veteran producers John McEntire (of Tortoise) and Sean O'Hagan (of the High Llamas) on a few tracks and takes them along for the ride as they explore the effects of Tropicalia on the music of modern Brazil. O'Hagan's remix of the song, YaYaYa, is topnotch.

Make way for the mothership in March!! The Existential Soul of Tim Maia is on its way to record stores in April, with a vinyl edition dropping in advance of the wider release. For the uninitiated, Tim Maia lands somewhere near Seu George and Percy Sledge – a 1970s Brazilian genius utterly soaked in soul. Straight from the super-worlds to your stereo.

Those in Chicago this past weekend may have been lucky to get their claws on tickets to see Susana Baca's sold-out dance performances at the Harris Theatre in Millenium Park. The performances melded Susana's music with the work of the Luna Negra dance company. Barefoot and majestic, Susana breathed new life into her material, as she danced and sang her way through the weekend in Chicago.

Just think, a few months after 2007 surfaces, Jim White's tentatively titled album, Transnormal Skiparoo, will be available! Jim takes us deeper into his new-fangled American odyssey in these recent recordings.
As you read this, he is hard at work making new old-looking images for his album cover. Ever the tinkerer, he recently discovered that removing the front seat of an economical bubble car like the Geo gives him plenty of room to load up his many effects boxes and pedals for gigging. Stay tuned for extended versions of his trailer trash poetry and more stories from the road.

Nouvelle Vague are living the good life on You-Tube. See their video for 'O Pamela' here

Attention BROOKLYN: mark your calendars on December 1st and 2nd for the Red Hot + Riot Live Celebration of Fela Kuti, featuring Dead Prez, Amadou & Mariam, Les Nubians, Yerba Buena, and Meshell Ndegeocello. The concert happens on World AIDS Day and a portion of proceeds will go to HIV/AIDs support systems. The event is also part of a weeklong series of Afrobeat concerts at BAM.

nouvelle vague

Septemberish, 2006

One of the greatest privileges of adulthood is being able to go out at night without a chaperone. The freedom to experience music under a cloak of sophistication and darkness is hard to resist. What better way to celebrate this liberty than to see some of your favorite Luaka artists while enjoying an adult beverage at a night spot near you.

Nouvelle Vague's new album is brimming with shiny black pearls. Catch their bossa nova cabaret as it hits the U.S. for a string of shows in September. Fill your evening with sass, glamour and French girls. Phoebe, Melanie, and Olivier will charm your chausettes off. The schedule is here. For added fun, check this video for Nouvelle's take on 'Dance With Me.' C'est tres amusant!

Hot on the heels of Nouvelle Vague comes the enviable sway of Susana Baca. Baca and her band of Peruvian gentlemen swing through The States this fall. They will perform a multi-evening stint at The Jazz Alley in Seattle -- so those of you in the Northwest will have the good fortune to hear Suasana till you (just about) get your heart's fill. If you haven't heard Susana's newest release, Travesias, you can stream it here.

Susana performs:

10.21 Santa Cruz, CA - The Attic
10.22 San Francisco, CA - GAMH
10.25 Portland, OR - Aladdin Theatre
10.26 - 10.29 Seattle, WA - Dimitrious Jazz Alley
11.01 New York, NY - Sounds of Brazil
11.03 Boston, MA - Museum of Fine Arts
11.05 Decatur, GA - Presser Hall
11.07 Asheville, NC - The Orange Peel
11.08 Knoxville, TN - Bijou Theater
11.12 Minneapolis, MN - Orchestra Hall

Come explore the inner workings of the Luaka Bop Factory with David Byrne. Follow this link to learn how we manufacture our magic.

If you're in Europe, you can catch Jim White on tour with his new side project featuring Johnny Dowd (who also appears on the Luaka Bop soundtrack to Jim's film, Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus.) Dates for Hellwood here: http://www.johnnydowd.com/news.html

ATTN NEW YORKERS: be sure and check out the Tropicalia Exhibit opening at The Bronx Museum in October: http://www.bronxmuseum.org

Want the Tropical Truth? Caetano Veloso's book is Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.

While we're on the topic of growing up, (at least we were at the beginning of this update) the third installment from The Plus 2's is right around the corner. Kassin +2 has already gotten tons of love in Japan and here is what the dudes at Dusty Grooves sayeth about the new configuration: "The main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record is a real instant classic from Brazil."

We'd waited such a long time, and it finally happened! Our first time was at the The Hiro Ballroom this summer. The other first happened at one of her early September dates at Irving Plaza. Both were magical evenings. Yes, you could even say they were "The Greatest." After years of following her career and being told that Chan Marshall could be a bit of a challenge to see live, the Luaka Bop mainstays got to see Cat Power charm audiences at two very different shows. She can play alone or with a big ol' band and keep the focus on her semi-sad songs and finely serrated voice. She's really grown and matured as an artist and performer.

August, 2006

Jack from NYC Says: "It is kinda getting a bit autumny"

So, as we roll through the last month of summer, we look forward to the return of Nouvelle Vague as they power through another U.S. tour. Word is in on their new album 'Bande A Part,' and that word, according to Filter magazine, is that it's a 'happy scary little album.' The Tripwire's love of the group has been galvanized with this record, saying 'Nouvelle Vague recreates each song with love and dedication and the end result is something new and fresh. They aren't just covering the song; they are making it their own.' Check our tour page for a chance to see French Girls! Live! In September!

***A special side note that ESG, the very cool no-wave band originated by 3 sisters from The Bronx in the early 80's and whose song 'Moody' is a bonus track on the first pressing of 'Bande A Part,' are playing The Hook in Brooklyn on Sept 15th, just a few days before NV play Webster Hall in Manhattan on Sept 19th.

Also, coming to NYC in September, a great chance to see a performance by Otto, one of the artists on our forthcoming compilation: Brazil Classics 7:What's Happening in Pernambuco:New Sounds From the Brazilan Northeast. This will be the seventh installment in Luaka Bop's Brazil Classics Series and features sounds from the state of Pernambuco, where, in the 90's, there was a rock-funk-rap-electronic explosion. This movement, just over a decade old, is known as mangue-beat. The artists in this scene embrace the cross-pollenating potential of traditional maracatu with beats channeled from across the universe. Catch Otto at Joe's Pub on September 17th.

Another phenom we are hoping to bring you in the coming months is a compilation by outlaw Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia. Catch a bit of his enviable baritone here and let us know how giddy it makes you to hear such deep, rumbling soul.

Although he is still hard at work on a new album, we received a Jim White report just a few days ago and would like to extend our congratulations to him and his wife on the birth of their new baby. Just a few months ago he recorded about 8 songs with the members of Ollabelle, with most of the production work being handled by Joe Pernice and Michael Deming. Tucker Martine (Laura Veirs, The Decemberists) is slated to produce one track on the album and he may go into the studio in LA to work with some other musicians who have received the Joe Henry seal-of-approval.

Vetiver-- Since 75% of peeps around here caught this band on separate occasions over 7 days in July and liked 100% of what we heard, we think there's a good chance you all will, too. Plus, some members of the group joined Os Mutantes on stage at the Pitchfork Festival (yes, we're talking about you Mr. Banhart). That oughta keep you all cool a while longer...

We know you’re all asking yourselves, “What position is Mercury in? How
is it possible that I am suddenly receiving an electronic update from
LUAKA BOP after years of scanning our horoscopes for signs that an
inimitable music medium was trying to reach us?!?”

Well, since Mercury (which rules communication, transportation & business)
goes into retrograde for an extended period in July, we thought it best to

SHE is superb, and watching them when THEY ARE ON TOUR AGAIN THIS FALL
will remind you that it is possible to have a totally fulfilling vicarious
experience.

"She sings with an extraordinarily smooth tone, touched with an almost
subliminal rasp, and phrases with such grace and precision you immediately
know you're listening to a master." — Salon

June, 2006

OK truth be told Os Mutantes were absolutely amazing in their performance at The Barbican on May 22nd. They had some technical issues starting out, but ultimately transcended them for a fantastic performance! Both Sergio and his brother Arnaldo in their Elizabethan get-ups (CAPES & TIGHTS, people!) lived up to the pre-concert hype. 'Time Out London' referred to them as 'The world's greatest psych-rock band' in their preview of the show. We were all relieved that they sounded so great. Rita was not really missed, (well maybe a little bit), but that's because Zalia Duncan did such a fantastic job! Sergio's guitar lines came out of nowhere and sounded incredible. The band themselves were ecstatic as they hadn't played a show together for 30 years! It was a great time all around.

Speaking of great shows, do you know we have a new Susana Baca album out? She did a mini tour to support 'Travesias' before her long tour next fall and for all those who have never seen her, there is not another artist on the label who can wrap you up in an emotional blanket like Susana Baca can. As miserable as you may be from the headaches of day-to-day life, Susana's performance heals. Sorry if we are getting too metaphysical here, but it's true. While she was in NYC with her band to play Joe's Pub and record a spot for World Cafe http://www.worldcafe.org, her incomparable guitarist, Sergio Valdeos, had a guitar emergency. We'd suspect that the restorative power of her music had a hand in healing its broken neck (along with Richie's Guitar Shop & Godin guitars, thanks Richie & Fred!) before they left for the West Coast.

Jim White finished recording with Olabelle and has taken all of the tapes home to Athens to masticate. Hopefully we will be able to play something from those sessions here. Look for them next month.

Nouvelle Vague's new album 'Bande A Part' is due out August 22nd. It's a blend of bossa nova styles and more Caribbean influences over new and no wave covers. There will be three extra tracks for the very first pressing, so get it while it's hot! The extra tracks are: Blue Monday (originally by New Order), Moody (by ESG) and Sweet and Tender Hooligan by The Smiths.

New intern Michael just returned from a semester in India where he recorded an album of dueling sitars. His favorite things to eat were Butter Paneer Massala from a shop in Jaipur called Mohan Dabbas and the Kashmiri Aloo that his friend's host mother made. Host mothers rule!

We remain,
Luaka Bop

In other news:

Jim white started recording his new album this week, so in tribute here are the words to one of his new songs:

STRANGER CANDY
c 2006 Jim White/Mike Pratt

It was 1967, I was watching a TV show
when the glowing screen went blank,
I looked out of my window.
I saw 27 crows perched on my antenna.
In the glass a familiar face appeared.
Who it was I don’t remember.

Now mother’s milk is dandy
when you’re a little baby.
But as the wheels of time grind you down
you get a taste for stranger candy.

Back in December of ‘81, I saw my dear old friend John
fall down drunk at the Christmas parade
with his children looking on.
His wife, she’d lost her mind.
She was committed for a time.
She took refuge when they set her free
in some weird earstern philosophy.

yeah...Chorus

This life they say is hard,
but still it's all you know.
You can close your eyes and try to run away,
but pray where will you go?
Yeah this life is all you know.
Death is dark and strange.
It's the near and worrisome voice you hear
forever calling out your name.

As I was walking down the street
last week in Portland Oregon,
I found the last of many keys I lost.
I picked it up and I grinned.
Sometimes them crows take flight...
and if you can shoo ‘em from your brain,
you will find yourself in the nick of time
calling the devil by his name.
Calling the devil by his name.

yeah mother’s milk is dandy
when you’re a little baby
but as the wheels of time
grind you down
you get a taste
just a little taste
for stranger candy.
For stranger candy

Best,
Us.

Tom Ze continues to get really amazing press. Check out this interview that ran with him in Pop Matters. David thought it was so like Tom to do an interview about being interviewed.

http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews/ze-tom-060310.shtml

Jim White has been working on new song demos as he is planning to go into the studio next month to record his new album with Joe Pernice producing and Olabelle backing. You guys should really hear the demo Jim recorded for the album a while back. In lieu of a stream of the tune, call our dedicated music line to hear a chorus of husky Georgia church ladies humming the refrain.

Susana is on a really nice long tour of Europe. The company we go through, V2, wanted a different mix of the song she sings in French ("Ne Quelque Part") and so we asked Marc Collin of Nouvelle Vague to do the honors. It's quite subtle as far as mixes go, but very nice. This is the only song we will play off of the Dedications line, which is different from the dedicated line mentioned above.

The singer for Os Mutantes could be Zilia Duncan. We shall see. The band have added about four more dates to make this their first real U.S. tour. Call the request line to ask that they add dates for your hometown, college town, or city you would most like to visit this summer if it is not already listed here:

Friday, July 21st- Webster Hall, NYC
Sunday, July 23rd- Hollywood Ball, L.A.
Monday, July 24th- The Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco
Wednesday, July 26th- Moore Theatre, Seattle
Sunday, July 30th- Pitchfork Music Festival, Union Park, Chicago

Mika down the hall from us found a Nagoya take-out chicken place right here in NYCity. And as she is from Nagoya, it made her day. "The chicken is just like my mom's!" She even recognized one of the guys working there but, since she is Japanese, was too polite to say anything to him.

Mid March, 2006

We have been putting off writing a new news page. Sometimes we are just not in the mood to talk about new things, and isn't it better that we simply keep to ourselves, rather than offer up bread and circuses in the meantime? Nonetheless, things are happening.

For one, as we alluded to earlier, Os Mutantes is getting back together and will play a smattering of shows. Their first show will be May 22nd in London at the Barbican. Then there will be two U.S. shows, the first is in New York July 21st at Webster Hall and the second show is July 23rd at Hollywood Bowl with Flaming Lips and Thievery Corp!

Pretty great, huh?

Brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias + the original drummer Ronaldo "Dinho" Leme will be performing. Rita Lee will not be part of this group, however. Her role in the band will be filled by another female Brazilian singer. At the moment Rebecca Mata from Bahia is slated to perform with the group, though that may change.

Here is what David Nadelle and Amy Phillips from Pitchfork report:

What Kurt Cobain couldn't do, a London arts center will: on May 22 at the Barbican, Brazilian psychedelic rock legends Os Mutantes will perform for the first time since 1973. Unfortunately, brothers Sergio and Arnaldo Baptista (as well as drummer Ronaldo "Dinho" Leme) are not scheduled to perform with original singer Rita Lee. But as Meat Loaf would say, two out of three ain't bad.

This remarkable concert is part of the Barbican's "Tropicália: A Revolution in Brazilian Culture" festival, which is on now and will continue until May 21. The celebration of music, art, film, theatre, and dance examines the revolutionary Tropicália movement of late-60s Brazil. Government censorship inspired a creative outburst of provocative and spontaneous art.

Musically, the scene exploded after the 1968 compilation album Tropicália ou Panis et Circensis, attracted worldwide attention. Os Mutantes began their career as the house band on a Brazilian TV show, but became weirder and weirder as time went on. They worked with Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, wore crazy costumes, put on multimedia performances, and recorded experimental sound collages long before it was cool.

In 1993, Cobain attempted to reunite the band, but they refused. Oh, snap! David Byrne's Luaka Bop label released the Os Mutantes compilation Everything Is Possible. Beck has also given the band mad props. So this is a pretty big deal.

Tom Ze's album, due out April 11 in case you don't see the banner flashing there, has been getting fantastic pre-release press.

---PASTE calls it “a delicious, intelligent, high-spirited final product from the fertile mind of Tropicália’s black sheep. “

---PopMatters sez, “Zé's latest, Estudando o Pagode, is a bizarre and wonderful melange of familiar and unfamiliar sounds, opening with what sounds like a swarm of bees, and moving through exuberant choruses, syncopated samba rhythms and hauntingly beautiful arias.”

And Susana, who will do a few U.S. shows in the middle of her European tour (link to her tours page), to support her new album due out May 9th.

May 18 NYC - Joe's Pub

May 20 Seattle, WA - Crocodile Cafe

May 21 San Francisco, CA - The Independent

May 23 Los Angeles, CA - The Conga Room

Nouvelle Vague is readying their new album called ‘Bande à Part’ from the Jean Luc Goddard film of that name that tells the story of a bunch of outsiders. Oh, Goddard, how we love outsiders! He made the film as an assault on what popular French film should be. We will tell you more about the album later, as it is due out on Luaka Bop August 22nd. The band will play in Miami on April 20th and NYC April 21st.

On the food front we have moved...new address can be found around here somewhere. All sorts of new food vendors abound-- really fantastic fare! For one, New York's food cart culture is really rockin’. Our new favorite cart is at the corner of 5th Avenue and 21st. They have this Harrissa type of hot sauce that could probably make wax paper taste good. Not to mention that 21st Century remake of a cafeteria called City Bakery. Almost everything there is frighteningly good (and on the expensive size, paid for by weight, so watch it). They have reinvented Mac and Cheese to become the Michelin version of school food!

February, 2006

NYC weather has been unseasonably warm for the last few weeks, giving us a
false sense of spring to accompany the April and May releases we're
working on. It's like having seasonal affective disorder with an absurd
upswing, so we're not sure if we actually like it.

Susana is getting ready to leave Lima for a European press tour. Plus, she

We finally got the master tape of a live Zap Mama show recorded in
Brussels, Belgium that we will release on DVD. We've been keeping this one
under our hats because it's taken so long to get the original recording.
You may begin salivating at the prospect of owning a copy of a hometown
performance by the group, now that we've got it in the works.

We are also preparing a series of extended albums with extra tracks...

Tom Zé "Fabrication Defect" with a few of the live recordings made with
members of Tortoise + those remixes from this album.

Jim White's "No Such Place" will have alternate versions and unreleased
demos added + videos and an early EPK.

Los Amigos Invisibles "Zinga Son" will have live material recorded for a
TV eshow.

And, if all goes according to plan, we will have unreleased Os Mutantes
tracks to add to our "Everything Is Possible" release. We are dispatching
someone to Brazil this month to investigate ALL the possibilities.

I asked Tara what food item we should put here at the end and she
suggested Dumpling House on Eldridge since she thinks about their sesame
pancakes all day long! They're only .50 cents a piece! Hey, is the 'cent
sign' officially anachronistic? Guess some symbols stand the test of time
better than others...

All the best,
Luaka Bop

It is now 2006 in the galaxy of Orion (yo)...

We have finished our Susana Baca album after many sequencing discussions. Friends of ours in France have asked one of the Nouvelle Vague guys to mix one of the songs Susana sings in French.

Had discussions with Tom Ze as to whether he will play any dates in the US. He says, "Maybe." And we're mulling over producer ideas for Jim White's next album. Jim is working on new songs, and also working with Johnny Dowd on an album partially composed of songs we didn't want to release. Those of you hard core Jim White-ites will love it.

Trying to get all the licenses signed for a new compilation of regional Brazilian music. Also on the Brazilian front we are planning another edition of our World Psychedelic Classics series that we have been working on for three years. It is a psychedelic religious soul album.

On the food front, while on hold with Apple Computer this holiday break, we asked the Austin Texas (holla!) based help line person a BBQ recommendation. He suggested Coopers in Llano http://www.coopersbbq.com/ . They deliver (double holla!).
